Santa Rosa Masters

Party Preparation (Monday's clinic)

by Jefferson Coelho

In today's clinic, Hermine touched on a number of things we have to have in mind as we race in our upcoming meet; the idea is to swim fast, and thus have more time to enjoy the party outside the pool.

We started with the basics, or 1-2-3, as follows:

December is SRM's MOC (month of connection)

As most of you know by now Coach Hermine has been actively mixing it up in the pool this last week. This is so that we all can get to know people in distant lanes and also for those of you who have never raced or never been too fast to ask questions of the more seasoned swimmers and for the more seasoned swimmers to offer gentle advice and encouragement. This is all about TEAM Flower Power...pulling together and getting stronger & faster together.

Here are a couple reflections of the Thursday workout-

Time to sign up for the meet

As most of you have probably heard by now. SRM will be hosting its first ever swim meet on January 12th 2013. This will be held at the Santa Rosa Junior College pool. For those of you who have never been to a meet, now is the time. For those of you who race all the time this will be a fun race in our very own hood. Regardless of skill or experience this race promises to be great fun!

So here are the "deets" (as in details) -  MEET SHEET

And register here-  REGISTRATION

It would be great to have as clsoe to 100% SRM participation as possible. This could be just 1 race or 20. Make it fun, Make it REAL!!

And, most importantly, leave the power in the pool...flower power that is.

Monday's Clinic

Today was an exciting day at Ridgway.  After warm-up, Hermine went into full storytelling mode, revealing she had had a life-changing Thanksgiving weekend with her daughters.  During the weekend, she realized she is perceived by many in her life as an alpha female.  She indicated she wanted to become gentler, humbler, and more sensitive.  She even divulged a couple of less-than-perfect moments she has had in the pool in the past.  For most of us, all these revelations made us wonder what the new Hermine will be like going forward and what this means for all of us at practices.  Will things be so strange now that something will seem lacking at workouts?  (I heard her start a sentence off today to us “I want you to…”, which she quickly changed to “It would be spectacular if you would…”.  Wow!)  Will we embrace the new coach, or will we demand that the Hermine we’ve all loved over the years come back?  These are certainly questions that need to be answered in the days to come…

It's time to join the team.

As most of you have probably heard over the last few weeks- now is the time to renew your membership to the Santa Rosa Master program. As a registered Masters team, this yearly membership is not optional, and is required to participate in the masters program and for our coach to be insuranced through the US Masters organization.  I know it's easy to forget but this needs to be done by December 31st. Were not quite halfway there.

So take a little time out of your hectic day...

Grab the card,...turn the TV down, crank up the tunes, put the kids to bed...whatever it takes and

Monday Clinic in Review

Monday Novermber 19th

Masters Class

The class started out with the x-factor drill on the boards. We used the free style arms but with a 3 second hold, (the arms were straight up in the air on each side). This was not easy on the first 2 laps. I had this incredible sinking feeling and could barely stick my arm up much less leave it straight in the air for 3 seconds.  Coach Hermine gave us a visual on body positioning, core support, and high alternating “rear”.  The next time I tried the drill I improved and was able to hold my arm up longer and feel the flow of my position better.

The next drill was a practice drill on the free style flip turn. The drill was to stand straight and practice tight tuck turns. We continued practicing the turns at the wall while swimming laps to get the full approach with momentum.

The practice ended with everyone participating in a free style 50 yd. race starting from the blocks and a relay race

We are preparing for our pool party in January !! (aka The Meet)
